Once a month, the introductory creative writing professor at Lycia University, Professor Mikhail Zavtrakovich Lisyev, hosts a university-sponsored interspecies "night brunch" in the Candidae teacher's lounge for his students to encourage them to get to know each other and share perspectives. He believes that sitting together at the same table and directly confronting their 'difference' will be the only way that herbivores and carnivores will come to understand each other. His students support him passionately even if it seems to them sometimes that the fox's philosophies are a little too high-minded for reality. Professor M. Z. Lisyev's stances on interspecial marriage, which not controversial for a progressive interspecies college, have made him a source of derision and scorn for purebred students. They believe that his views regarding the rights of venomous reptiles are dangerous. Professor Lisyev is not the only professor who teaches introductory creative writing so most students simply choose not to take his class if they disagree with his beliefs, but he's received more than a few written complaints from parents who, as he puts it, 'disagree with their children being taught that reptiles have rights.' (Although he does admit that some of the complaints from the Candidae faculty have merit regarding the fact that it's unfair for only some students to have access to the teacher's lounge and café.) Until recently, Professor Lisyev seemed to take it all in stride, but he had recently started to show his frustration. The board was slow-moving on approving space for his own student lounge, citing funding issues. He shuttered his office hours for the week beore the next café luncheon, citing an unusually heavy load of paperwork but reassuring his students it would only be temporary.
One meeting, his students show up to find that Professor Lisyev is mysteriously absent from the café, leaving behind nothing but a tuft of carelessly torn fur and a frightening amount of blood. When the students try to escape they find that the exits to the café have been locked. Their cell phone reception is mysteriously blocked, preventing any of them from calling for help. Due to the late hour, the students decide that their only choice is to wait out the situation until daybreak, when one of the Candidae professors would be sure to find them. However, it's becoming more and more clear that there are signs of life stirring in the café, and it's definitely not friendly.
